Galway meeting update 16th Dec 2010

Claiming Our Future, Galway

Thursday 16th December 2010

Claiming our Future Galway held a meeting on December 16th. It began by reviewing the national CoF event held at the end of September in the RDS.

There was agreement that CoF needs to be looking at short-term (particularly in the context of the forthcoming election) and long-term goals.

Electoral (political structural) reform was identified as a key priority (both in the short and long terms) and there was consensus that the present political structure is fundamentally flawed. It was agreed that CoF Galway needs to upskill on the issues in relation to electoral systems and procedures, as well as alternatives to the current system.

It was also agreed that that there is a need to organise at a community level, engage with the wider community, both rural and urban in Co. Galway and its hinterlands with COF.

The difficulty in accessing the media in Galway was noted.

Plan:

The next meeting will focus on organising a seminar on Electoral Reform (to be called Enhancing Democracy?). It will take place on Tuesday 11th January, 6:30pm, Rape Crisis Network Ireland, Quay St. (above Fat Freddies). All welcome.
